K9 CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Join the K9 Conservation team for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the day-to-day workings of a conservation unit protecting South Africa’s iconic wildlife. Volunteers will shadow field experts, observe the training of working dogs, and engage in a range of eco-conservation activities while gaining first-hand exposure to the complex world of wildlife protection.
This program is ideal for international travelers, students, career seekers, and animal lovers who want to be actively involved in ethical, boots-on-the-ground conservation practices.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Shadow experienced conservationists and working dog handlers
Learn about anti-poaching K9 selection and training methods
Explore the role of detection dogs in conservation and species protection
Participate in non-security-related field activities, environmental education, and general base operations
Enjoy excursions into the Drakensberg landscape and assist in bioregional maintenance
Please note: For safety and regulatory reasons, volunteers will not take part in armed or security-related patrols.
These remain the responsibility of PSiRA-qualified Field Rangers.
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM OPTIONS
Makhulu Program – 1 Week
Assegai Program – 2 Weeks
Shaka Program – 3 Weeks
Zingela Program – 4 Weeks
Accommodation and meals are included. We host up to six volunteers at a time to ensure a personal, immersive experience.
Bookings are open to individuals and small groups.
*Discounts are available for South African citizens (inquire about eligibility).
HALF-DAY & FULL-DAY OPTIONS
For travelers with limited time, we also offer half-day and full-day volunteer experiences. These programs are available without the standard application or interview process.
ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must:
Be 18 years or older
Be physically fit and mentally prepared for outdoor activities
Be confident around animals
Be open-minded, respectful of others, and able to work as part of a team
Be willing to follow all safety instructions (essential for your safety and that of others)
Be resilient and enthusiastic about conservation work
All long-term volunteers (1–4 weeks) must undergo a virtual interview as part of the application process.
